There are times when writing just happens. I can’t explain it. You’re basically in a lazy river and the current gently carries you along. Maybe it’s in a style where I’m confident, maybe it’s for a group that I know will bring the thing to life, maybe it’s Mercury in retrograde.
All cards on the table, I have no desire to understand why Mercury always seems to be in retrograde. But I enjoy saying it like I’m an expert in the field.
Then there are times you stare blankly at empty sheet music as you hope to fill it up, questioning every decision you’ve ever made that led you to this exact moment of failure.
Barney and I were just chatting about how he needs another four or five minutes of material for an upcoming project. He asked if I had anything lying around and I said I didn’t. But I couldn’t let go of the idea. It’s probably hugely irresponsible, but I’m determined to give him what needs for this recording session. And I basically have 24 hours to make it happen. Here’s hoping I can tap into the lazy river.
Stay tuned…
